Miami-Dade County's order for residents to wear facial coverings went into affect Friday morning.

The order requires anyone working in or visiting grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, construction sites, public transportation and vehicles for hire, and any business that is requiring social distancing, to wear some type of face mask.

Masks can be homemade our of things such as scarves or bandannas. The order also states that this new measure does not change the social distancing guidelines, and residents should continue that practice.

The order was signed by county mayor Carlos Gimenez and follows the steps of various cities within the county who had already administered these precautions, such as Miami Beach and the City of Miami. Earlier this week the Center for Disease Control and Prevention also issued new guidelines that encouraged people to cover their face when in public.

People are urged not to buy surgical or N95 masks, so that they can be reserved for healthcare workers.
