Time-lapse Video Shows Boston’s Massive Snow Pile That Refuses To Melt.

Posted

BOSTON — Neither sunshine nor warm temperatures are any match for Boston’s biggest snow pile.

Storm after storm in February and March, trucks would dump most of the city’s snow in a huge pile. Eventually, the parking lot pile reached more than 75 feet high.

In the time-lapse video, you can see the red line marking the highest point of the snow. The video starts in March and goes all the way into early July.

Three factors have contributed to the snow pile’s ability to linger in warm weather: the thickness of the pile, the below-normal amounts of rain and the amount of energy needed to convert ice to liquid.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh started a contest on Twitter using the hashtag #BOSMeltNow to let people guess the date the snow will be completely melted. Will it melt before winter begins? Bostonians will have to wait and see.
