Danbury, CT - A pregnant teen from Connecticut has decided to keep her baby despite being diagnosed with the Zika virus.
"My mom had called me crying and said, 'Your blood work got back and you tested positive for Zika,'" Sara Mujica shared.
Yeah, 17-year-old Mujica says she contracted the virus while visiting Honduras, and after learning she has it, she's decided to still have her baby.
But the Zika virus could cause her child to face several birth defects like "a small head and a small brain volume," one Zika specialist said.
Those birth defects can then lead to many more problems later on.
"It may mean for the baby that they could have problems with developmental delay, not hitting their milestones, and cognizant problems," the Zika specialist continued.
Mujica has set up a Go Fund Me page to help raise funds for her and her baby's medical expenses.
Right now, though, the teen is trying to plan a wedding with her fiance' back in Honduras, where he lives.
She says he also wants her to keep the baby but is concerned about her health at this point.
The mom-to-be says she's especially worried about the possibility the baby could be born "deformed," as she put it.
Mujica says when she first returned to the states back in March, she knew something was wrong because she had a fever and rashes all over her body.
She plans to return to Connecticut to have the baby, so right now the couple is just keeping their fingers crossed that all goes well and that the baby will be born healthy and strong-- despite the odds against that.
