Sucky Sunscreen

ILLINOIS- Sorry sunbathers- We`ve got bad news for anyone looking for a little fun in the sun this summer.

A study from Northwestern University shows that nearly half of popular sunscreens don`t meet the American Academy of Dermatology`s sun safety standards.

“It’s important for everyone to wear sunscreen. If we're outside and our skin is exposed to the sun, we're going to be exposing ourselves to harmful UVA and UVB rays that contribute to photo-aging but also damaged DNA.” Explained Dr. Tracy Kats, a dermatologist for SBA Skincare.

Of the top 65 sunscreen products, 4 out of 10 did not  resist sweat and water, and we all know how important it is to protect against sweat in Texas

“Of course when we're outside, we're perspiring, we're sweating and so we're also in the water, so we lose some of that sunscreen. Some of that's going to wash off.” Said Dr. Katz.

In order to be considered 'water-resistant' the sunscreen should still work after 40 minutes of water exposure

The American Academy of Dermatology also advises picking sun screen that is at least 30 SPF, which blocks out 97% of the sun`s rays.

“So you always want to make sure when you pick out a sunscreen that it has broad spectrum on it.” Told Dr. Katz.

So make sure to snag some sunscreen that`s labeled 'water-resistant' if you want the best protection from the sun’s rays.
