The Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College, aka MOAD, offers visitors access to unique cultural, historical and educational exhibitions. And the museum’s curator Sophie Landres is excited about the impact MOAD has on our community.
"The Museum of Art and Design at Miami Dade College is a museum that focuses on contemporary art and design, and we have a robust program of exhibitions that take place within our newly-renovated galleries. The museum is also committed to being a museum without boundaries. What this means is that a large portion of our programming actually takes place around Miami. This is a way we can include more people in the conversations that we spark and the experiences that we foster," said Curator of Public Programs and Education, Sophie Landres.
As for the various MOAD installations and events outside the museum, there are plenty of options for South Floridians to enjoy
"In April we are launching a very ambitious program called 'The City of The People' and it will consist of film screenings and readings. There will also be performances that all explore what it means to exist in and as an urban community," said Landres.
And of course, inside the Museum, there is so much to see, including multiple exhibitions this month and beyond.
"Currently on view we have 'Superflex: We're All On The Same Boat' which is an art collective based in Denmark and the exhibition we have is a very eclectic group of photo installations and videos, we have a 40 foot light sculpture and even a work that calls for the audience's participation in the piece. All of the different objects deal with a wide range of topics also from the mortgage crisis to the climate crisis, immigration, corruption. The show comes together in a very focused, unified way as a testament of how the most consequential issues of our times are all interrelated," said Landres.
Regarding the overall artistic aesthetic in South Florida, Sophie believes it’s unique, yet part of something bigger.
"We're following kind of that old adage 'think globally, act locally' so Miami has a wonderful cultural identity to itself but part of it's cultural identity is the fact that it exist within a globalized world," said Landres.
