When it comes to home design, sure the interior is important, but don’t neglect your outdoor space. Designer Bea Pila says South Floridians should soak in the feeling of being outside, even when they’re home.
"What an outdoor space does for you is create an incredibly happy environment for you because nature is where we feel at our best. We spend about ninety-percent indoors, so the truth is we feel our best when the sun is in our face and when the wind is hitting us just the right way. It's so relaxing to be outdoors," said Pila.
Bea loves to design outdoor living spaces for clients and these spaces end up being great places to congregate.
"The truth is, today we can explore that eclectic environment the same way we would an interior. We can mix and match furniture of course by starting with seating cause you want to make sure that you're comfortable. That seating can be so diverse and varied. It can move-it can be rocking chairs, swings and all kinds of fun things. I think 'fun' is the operative word," said Pila.
As for the specifics, you and your guests will certainly be hungry, and thirsty.
"I always believe that wherever you have food and drink, that is where people will go. So if we take that outside, even if its just a bar cart. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, even though we would all love to have a built in barbecue or outdoor kitchen. However, the truth is, we can improvise and create outdoor eat and drinking spaces very simply by just taking it outside," said Pila.
And let’s not forget about entertainment.
"My clients are always thinking in terms of enjoying the outdoors with games. Ping pong, I love! In fact, I've designed a ping pong table that converts from a dining table to a ping pong table. It's so easy to make it outside to be completely durable to the exterior environment, whether dining or playing games, both can be done at the same time," said Pila.
Overall, whatever design aesthetic you choose, Bea says it’s all about how you want to feel.
"Instead of just coming from a place of style-of looking at the outside saying I want that, think in terms of how do I want to feel first. That's where I start. I always ask my clients how do you want to feel? Once we can pin down those words whether its comfortable or relaxed, then we can start creating from there." said Pila.
If you would like to work with Bea Pila or learn more about her, here’s how you do it.
"You can go to my website bdipladesign.com or you can read my book "Sacred Spaces for Inspired Living: A Guide to Designed Enlightenment", which is a 7 step process that you can do yourself. That's actually why wrote it. I wanted people to have access to design because I really feel that design has the capacity to transform lives," said Pila.
