Across the country, the odds are stacked against students from low-income communities.

KIPP, also known as Knowledge Is Power Program, is a national nonprofit network of charter schools educating nearly 90,000 students between K-12th grade.

KIPP Sunrise Academy is Kipp's first school in South Florida and now with the 2019-2020 school year approaching, KIPP will be opening its second school, Kipp Liberty Academy in Liberty City.

"Kids can come from anywhere in the Broward or Miami-Dade area. They can apply. It's open enrollment so there is no criteria to enter. We serve all students from  special education to English language learners, etc. The big mission is to support these students all the way through college. For students who come in from 5th-6th grade, they have the opportunity to attend all the way through 8th grade as we build this school up, and then they can go on to the high school that we're going to build. Then they can go on to our high school that we'll build and then we have a program called KIPP through College that supports students in applying to college, getting scholarships and getting them all the way through college," said Ian Bravo, School Leader Kipp Liberty Academy.

Kipp Liberty Academy's curriculum is unique and will work to develop knowledge and character strengths in students.

"We want to make sure that school is fun for all of our kids. Kids have all of their core classes. Our big goal is to make sure all of our kids love reading by the end of the first year. We have beautiful libraries for kids to check out books. We also have a performing arts program that we're building where kids will be singing and dancing throughout the year with multiple student performances. Then we have a physical education program which we believe is really important," said Bravo.

And the students aren't the only ones who shine bright at KIPP Miami.

"I would wager money that we have the most committed staff who are phenomenal teachers. Both at the elementary school and at the middle school we have staff who have worked at KIPP schools around the country, we have teammates who have worked in Miami for many years and many who are from the community in which we're teaching," said Bravo.
