Whether you're starting your fitness journey from scratch or trying to get back to your usual routine, there are simple mistakes we've all made that can hinder your success. Fitness guru and owner of Smashfit, Heather Frey, is back as part of our Summer-ize series with tips on how to avoid these mistakes.
Frey says the biggest mistake she sees is when people try to make several lifestyle at once. Trying to completely overhaul your diet and add in rigorous workouts multiple times a week could be a bigger goal than you're ready for. Instead, you should pick one or two goals and then add to them as you go.
"If you make it too hard, you're not going to stick with it," she says.
You should also be prioritizing yourself. Trying to squeeze a workout in rather than setting a time for it is a sure-fire way to start skipping them. If you're afraid of the actual work or intimidated by the gym, Heather suggests finding something you enjoy doing and using that as your physical activity for the day. Going for walks with your family or swimming will get you accustomed to moving your body, and you'll be more likely to want to try other things.
"There are tons of ways to work out and get in shape, so don't do something you hate," she says.
