For over 12 years Chad Van Horn has been a part of Big Brothers Big Sisters. Starting off as a big brother himself and then being invited to be part of the board of directors, he has committed himself to helping those around him.
Van Horn's father passed away when he was an infant and had several mentors through out his life. He decided to join the organization and become a mentor himself, being paired with his Little who he's still close with to this day.
In his new position he's spreading the word about the need more Bigs. There are hundreds of matches already and over 500 kids on the waiting list.
The first time Van Horn took his Little to the batting cages, he had never swung a bat before. After many more trips his Little ended up loving baseball.
"Being a big and being a mentor isn't about taking trips around the world or buying fancy dinners," Van Horn says. "It's about showing up and showing these kids different opportunities they may not have in their day to day life.
He has been able to see his little grow from a shy kid to an adult whose been able to open up and talk about things he might not have before.
The one goal Van Horn had since joining the board of directors was to get a mentor for every kid who signed up. The group is in need of Bigs right now, but especially Big Brothers.
