In light of the recent shootings in Atlanta that killed eight people, six of which were Asian, the demand for action against Asian hate crimes has reached a fever pitch. Journalist XiXi Yang spoke with our Jason Carter about how you can help.

In the last year alone there have been over 3,800 anti-Asian hate crimes reported, and about 8% of these target the elderly. Yang says this number is lower than than real number because often times these crimes are not reported due to language barriers, and since a part Asian culture is to not want to cause trouble or receive retribution for speaking out.

"Everyday as I'm on my Instagram and on social media I see so many horrific videos of members of my community being attacked," she says.

Yang also says this hate is not new, but the younger generation is not scared to speak out and report crimes, while also posting to social media.

Today marks the National Day of Action and Healing for Asian Americans. It's a day for everyone in the community to take part in the fight for equality to make sure this can be a safer place for those in the AAIP community.
