Coronavirus has affected families who have relied on schools to help nourish their children. With schools and some summer camps closed, the need for meal distributions are at an all time high That’s why for the sixth year, Meals On Wheels South Florida has begun their Summerbreak Spot program.
The program provides free, healthy lunches and snacks all summer long to kids 18 and under.
Before COVID-19, there were dine in locations for kids to eat their meals. Now the organization kick-started their grab and go locations to make it safer and easier for the families.
Meals On Wheels South Florida also partners with several local organizations that are using their resources to provide healthy meals to children. One of the programs, is the YMCA of South Florida which is now open for the summer.
"As parents that are coming off from the pandemic and we're still kind of experiencing, it has been very beneficial to be able to serve lunch and snacks to all of our camp participants as well as the community,"says Karla Creque, Associate Executive Director of Pembroke Pines YMCA.
The YMCA of Pembroke Pines is taking all the safety precautions for their staff, campers and of course their community.
"The restrictions is that we can't have anybody come in physically into the building. However, they are outside and we're still able to help our community whenever somebody comes in and needs meals. We have restricted capacity that's been a little different just because of CDC guidelines but, we are still able to cater to our families and our community," says Creque
Meals receive temperature checks when they arrive on site to ensure the safety of the kids. So campers like Kaylee Willams can enjoy them.
The menu changes every week. And YMCA of Pembroke Pines is a grab and go site for meal distributions.
