There is a charming bed and breakfast located in historic Overtown. Copper Door B&B opened its doors in July of 2018.
The husband and wife duo of Jamila Ross and Akino West gave life to the hotel by honoring the building and neighborhood’s powerful cultural past and its southern hospitality.
“It’s a really interesting story, a lot of our rooms were known as being used for gambling and brothels and just really fun time here in Miami. And a lot of our guest rooms are original in its state,” states Jamila Ross, Founder of Copper Door B&B.
The building has been around since the '40s. And the hospitality veterans updated Copper Door with modern design elements for guests to enjoy.
“We have 22 guest rooms in total. They’re all located on the second floor, we offer full, queen, and king-sized room packages. They all include in suite bathrooms and right now we are operating a self-check-in service. The guest rooms include basic amenities for you to have for a weekend or for a few days stay,” says Ross.
Recently, Ross and West won a $10,000 grant from the Beygood foundation which is a collaboration between Beyonce and the NAACP to help support Black-owned businesses affected by the Coronavirus pandemic.
“It means the world, it means everything, we hope that those funds can be utilized towards pivoting during this time to stay competitive against our partners and other more corporate hotels. So, it means a lot to us to be a part of a lineup of a lot of other great black entrepreneurs as well. And It’s certainly one of those things that you don’t expect to happen but it’s exciting when it does,” states the Founder.
