School Nurse, Monica Amador, is our Nurse of the Month. She was nominated by her students for her incredible work at Belen Jesuit Preparatory High School in Miami.

"There's a social component, emotional component, and family linking. We have accidents that happen in the school and it's nice for the parents to have somebody with some experience to back them up," said Amador.

Amador’s passion for healthcare started over 18 years ago, now her students benefit from her kind and nurturing nature.

"During the season, she was somebody we could always talk to about football, what happened last game, what we are planning coming up, things going on with the team. She's more than just a nurse, she's actually the mom of the school," said senior student, Mark Trapp.

“If you are injured or you are not feeling well, she’s an easy person to talk to and she’s always understanding," said sophomore, Matheus Guerra.

“She does it out love and it’s shown in everything she does for the boys,” said mother of a student, Johana Sarria.

Only three out of five schools across the country have full-time school nurses, often forcing school administrators with no medical training to step in and provide some level of care.

“They think it’s icepacks and band-aids. When people tell me that, I say you obviously have not seen what a school nurse does now. It’s important to know that nurses are not just hospital based. They are important in our schools,” added Amador.

When Monica isn’t working, she’s volunteering. She’s an American Red Cross Instructor, Stop the Bleed Ambassador and a volunteer for Medical Reserve Corps.

“I’ve always loved kids. One of the main reasons why I got into Nursing, especially with students, was because I'm a mother of a child with his own medical needs. I got to see that my teaching experience helped me in many ways because there is a lot of education that goes with the family, with the student, and I just felt that I had that calling," added Amador.
