From family calls to meetings and job interviews, zoom and Skype have become the new ways of staying connected during the pandemic. And now many companies are more open to the idea of hiring through video chat. If you’re applying for jobs or already have your first interviews lined up, here are some virtual interview tips to help you land that dream job.

Gabby Procci, the creative services lead at the Dan Marino Foundation, says there are a few things to do before entering an interview.

One, do your research. Look up the job description you’re interested in and company’s mission to find key words to use during the interview. Anticipate questions and prepare accordingly.

Two, rehearse and record yourself.

“There are a lot of filler words and may not realize the way we’re phrasing things so I highly recommend taking a chance to go on your own zoom privately and record yourself answering interview questions. Save that recording and watch it back that way you can take notes on the way you’re answering the questions,” said Gabby.

While setting up for your virtual interview, make sure you’re in a quiet space with internet connection. Most importantly, have a clean backdrop and dress the part.

“I think that it could be pretty distracting to go with anything too bold. Research has shown that light blues is something that interviewers find calming. So go with the classic white, blue, or creamed colored blouse. Make sure to always be formal even if you’re at home,” said Gabby.
