From skin and bones to the first-ever HSBC “Walk for the Animals” cover dog

Posted

Over the weekend, thousands of South Floridians flooded the streets of downtown Fort Lauderdale for the annual “Walk for the Animals.” As the Humane Society of Broward County’s largest fundraiser, the event raised over $500,000. That's money that will go directly to rehabilitating animals and finding them forever homes.

There are some amazing success stories with WFTA, like the walk’s first-ever cover dog, Petey.

From her photo on the HSBC walk brochure (left) it’s hard to believe that the photo on the right is the same dog.

Her owner, Kristie Swenson recalls the first time seeing Petey. "She was skin and bones, like nothing on her, her face was sunken in it was just horrific" says Swenson.

Petey had come from an abusive home. Kristie knew instantly that this was the dog for her.

"You know love at first sight really is what it came down to," Swenson recalls. "I just don’t understand why someone does that."

Now, much healthier and a bit famous, Petey and Kristie walk every year!

"Because of stories like her. Because I want to be able to give back, to have other animals find a forever home like she found with me and to be able to know what love is" Swenson adds.
